Spring 2024 RTW collection created by Aliah Nicole Designs named "LA PÁZ."
Being an only child of two immigrants has created this sense of pride for Colombia. Colombia has always been explained as our beautiful country, homeland, and people. As I grew up, I learned more about my country's history and political system. Being in a third-world country with limited resources and a government that is corrupt and can easily be overturned has allowed the "Guerrillas" (cartels) to create a political party and obtain political control.
I started looking into the recent protests and different forms of social activism and found that graffiti artists were the most inspiring to me. These Colombian graffiti artists inspired me to look in more textiles and create new graphics.
Throughout this process, I learned more about textiles and the process of creating and printing your own textile. I first started by painting and drawing a graphic style face on a muslin sample. I then scanned and edited it in Adobe Illustrator while also creating another symmetrical pattern digitally. I went to my schools' Maker Space and printed both patterns on t-shirt jersey cotton and then embroidered over them. Learning and creating my own textiles was the most enjoyable part of this project because I got to fabric print my own art and create that graffiti artist aesthetic.
